True Corporation Complies With NBTC Measures on Dismantling Telecom Equipment in Seven Border Provinces Since June, Plans to Remove 10 More Towers

Mitihoon  – True Corporation is supporting NBTC in its initiative to disable communication channels exploited by call center scam gangs. The company is also dismantling 10 mobile towers in Tak Province to enhance public safety. This follows the removal of transmission equipment from signal cabinets along border areas in seven provinces and 11 districts, a process completed in June last year. Furthermore, True Corporation is strengthening cybersecurity efforts through its “True CyberSafe” service, which blocks access to malicious links and URLs. This service is free for True and dtac customers, prompting them to think before clicking on potentially dangerous links.

Mr. Trairat Viriyasirikul, Deputy Secretary-General of the Strategic and Internal Affairs Cluster and Acting Secretary-General of NBTC, disclosed stricter mobile signal control measures along the Thai-Myanmar border. NBTC teams from central and northern regional offices conducted field inspections in Ban Wang Kaeo, Tak Province, opposite to Myanmar’s Shwe Kokko, identifying the need for additional restrictions to prevent cross-border telecommunications signals. As a result, NBTC has ordered all mobile operators to dismantle 24 signal towers located within 50 meters of the border across three districts in Tak Province: Mae Ramat, Mae Sot, and Phop Phra. The  dismantlementmust be completed by February 24, 2025. This measure builds on previous efforts to suspend telecom services in high-risk areas across seven provinces, aiming to prevent mobile signals from being exploited for transnational crimes, particularly call center scams.

True Corporation has been complying with NBTC measures by switching off and dismantling antennas facing neighboring countries. The company has adjusted or removed mobile towers in seven provinces and 11 districts, including:

  1. Tak – Mae Sot, Mae Ramat, Phop Phra
  2. Chiang Rai – Mae Sai, Chiang Khong, Chiang Saen
  3. Sa Kaeo – Aranyaprathet
  4. Chanthaburi – Pong Nam Ron
  5. Ranong – Mueang Ranong
  6. Buri Ram – Ban Kruat
  7. Surin – Kap Choeng

These operations, having been completed in June 2024, aimsto prevent cross-border criminal activities facilitated by Thai mobile signals. This initiative is part of a broader collaboration between True Corporation and NBTC to enhance public safety.

Mr. Chakkrit Urairat, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of True Corporation Plc., said, “True Corporation has consistently adhered to NBTC measures on controlling mobile signal towers, including the latest directive covering three districts in Tak Province: Phop Phra, Mae Sot, and Mae Ramat along the border areas. NBTC’s inspection identified 10 out of 24 True towerswere to be dismantled. The affected True and dtac towers along the border have already had their communication lines disconnected and signals suspended, with transmission directions adjusted to focus on Tak’s community areas.”

NBTC regulations require the complete dismantlementof towers within 50 meters of the border in Tak Province. Towers within 200 meters must be reduced transmission power and  limited to 15 meters in height, while those within 3.5 kilometers must havetransmission power lowered and not exceed 30 meters in height.

Following thedismantlement, True Corporation’s team will conduct a signal coverage survey in the area to assess mobile signals and engage with local communities. The company plans to install small cell towers in areas where coverage has decreased, ensuring service replacement while maintaining original efficiency and quality for Thai communities.

“Beyond cooperating with NBTC on tower dismantling, we have developed ‘True CyberSafe’ to enhance cybersecurity protection for our users against fraudsters. True and dtac customers can assure that their mobile devices are automatically protected, requiring no registration, app downloads, or additional costs. The service blocks access to dangerous links and URLs from SMS or browsers, and also protects TrueOnline customers from accessing potentially harmful websites through their web browsers,” Mr. Chakkrit concluded.
